SISSS00126 - Wilderness First Aid: Recertification / Upgrade (Release 2)

This course is designed for those who work in the Outdoor Recreation/wilderness tourist/education industry in a leadership capacity and have already obtained a Wilderness or Remote area first aid qualification. This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. This course places a strong emphasis on the principles of first aid, long term patient considerations and includes advanced patient treatment and care skills

About this course

LENGTH OF COURSE

This is a blended course with self-paced online learning (e-Learning) and face-to-face training. Before attending the face-to-face training, students will need to complete their e-Learning which can be done in one sitting or over several sessions. Depending on the student's learning ability, they should allow up to 3 hours for reading and e-Learning. Face-to-face training and assessment takes 8 hours per day over 3 consecutive days in a classroom environment.

ACCREDITATION

The following Skill Set has been identified through consultation with the Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA), the peak body for the Outdoor Recreation industry and will be utilised as the basis for the registration requirements of programs like the National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme (NOLRS). This course is also known as Remote Area First Aid which course satisfies the Code of Practice – First Aid in the Workplace and NSW Adventure Activity Standards.

ELIGIBILITY/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no stated prerequisites for this course but you are required to:

  • complete the online training prior to commencement of the course.
  • print your theory certificate and
  • attend all three days practical & assessment
  • have previously held a remote area or wilderness first aid qualification.

Associated course costs:
Due to the practical nature of the course, participants are advised to wear clothing appropriate for outdoor activities. You will be required to bring the following items:

  • Day pack
  • Rain Jacket
  • Appropriate outdoor style of clothing
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Your own food and drinks

ASSESSMENT

Assessment for this course requires successful completion of:

  • pre course material prior to course commencement
  • a written theory test
  • ongoing  practical first aid responses.
