Guide Cross Country Skiing

This is an Enrolment Fee Free Course.
We have some funding from Smart & Skilled to run courses designed to give you the skills to Guide Day and Overnight ski tours.

NOTE: 22 April 2019 – Compulsory Information and Planning Session – 3/18 Abel St, Jamisontown NSW 2750
This course is designed for those with previous outdoor recreation experience. You should be able to use a map and compass to navigate at an intermediate level. You are required to have strong personal management skills in overnight camping and cooking on personal stoves. This course is designed for outdoor guides wanting to add these competencies to their existing skills.


4 August 2019: Meeting at Rhythm Sports Cooma at 1pm for ski and boot fitting
5 August 2019: Meeting at 9am National Parks Building Sawpit Creek for planning (possibly ski in the PM)
6 August 2019: Cross country skiing skills – Meet at National Park Building Perisher at 9am
This day is for you to learn and refine your basic cross country skiing skills. You will be given coaching and tuition to ensure you have the minimum standard of skiing required to safety participate in the program.
7 – 12 August 2019: Ski Touring
9am: Meeting with all gear (see list below) for checking prior to departing expedition. This will be part of the assessment for planning.

Program Content

The units in the course are

SISOSKT305A Apply snow craft skills for day touring
SISOSKT410A Guide overnight ski tours
SISOSKT408A Apply snow craft skills for overnight touring
SISOSKT303A Day ski tour away from a patrolled area
SISOSKT201A Demonstrate basic cross country skiing skills

Early expedition will focus on
• Development of skiing skills
• Day touring
• Emergency procedures (improvised sleds, first aid, avalanche, communications)
• Campsite management
• Snowcraft for day and overnight ski touring

NOTE: you will be camping in tents near one of the following huts – Horse Camp, Tin, Whites River or Schlink Hut.

Then about day 3 of this block departing for expedition to Mount Jagungal.

The focus will be on expedition travel, overnight ski touring, snow craft and navigation.

Pre requisites:

Cert III Bushwalking, Navigation or equivalent.’

Venue and Access:

The venue will be the Kosciuszko national park. Students will need to provide their own transport to trip starting points but assistance will be given with car-pooling, chains must be carried and park entry costs are to be covered by students.


Students are required to provide all their own personal clothing, camping and ski touring equipment.

This course is enrolment fee free however Students need to allow for the cost of:
• Ski,boot and pole hire
• Required personal clothing
• Required personal equipment
• Food costs on trip
• National Parks entry
• Travel to and from the course and chain hire
• Possible camping fees

Group equipment: We have a small supply of Snow Tents, Stoves, snow shovels can be provided if needed.

We recommend you use Rhythm Sports at Cooma to rent or buy your cross country skiing equipment. They do a pretty good deal for students doing this course.
